WORKING AND STUDYING IN AUSTRALIA
International students who are studying in Australia on a student visa are granted many entitlements. These include: subsidised student health cover, permission to study for longer than three months as well as the student being able to apply for permission to work part time.
When the students course has commenced they are entitled to work up to 20 hours per week during the school term and unlimited hours outside the school term. There is evidence to suggest that more than 30% of international students take advantage of the working entitlements attached to their visas and receive an income from employment during their studies.
When an international student is considering whether or not to take on employment in Australia they should carefully consider the impact work will have on their studies. They need to think about how much time they would need to study properly and how much free time there would be left over for working. It is important that the student remembers that they need to do well in their study program.
International students who are contemplating joining the workforce in Australia should think about finding work closely related to what their future career might be. To gain experience in the career the student is studying for there are also possibilities of internships (any official or formal program to provide practical experience for beginners in an occupation or profession… dictionary.com) or joining a volunteer program in order to gain practical experience in the work place.
For those international students who wish to keep their minds focused on their study but want to earn some extra money for a holiday or other fun activities there is a range of “easier” jobs available in Australia. These jobs can be in fast food restaurants or cleaning work where the employee doesn’t have to focus too much on the job once it ends for the day therefore not interfering with the studying process.
International students can expect to earn $6 – $15 (Australian dollars) or €4 - 10 per hour depending on the kind of work the student takes on. They can generally find work in any area or field with the most popular jobs for international students including work in restaurants or fast food chains, retail shops, offices, nanny jobs and tutoring jobs.
For any international student who is unsure of which field they would prefer to work in or just need support and advice when job seeking, most university campuses have a Career Development Office (or something similar) where the student can go and learn more about finding a part time job or receive advice and assistance on how to apply for jobs in Australia.
